Class Time

CAPS

We follow the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) Grade R curriculum. The Grade R (Ladybirds and Butterflies) classes cover three subjects on which they are formally assessed throughout the year, namely Language, Mathematics and Life Skills. We ensure that Grade R graduates are well prepared for their transition to Grade 1 and we are proud to have a longstanding reputation amongst the staff at local primary schools for doing so to a very high standard. The Pre-Grade R class also cover the same three subjects but a more play-based method of instruction is used and the subjects are integrated throughout the activities.

Child-Centered Spaces

Each classroom has its own bookshelf and reading corner with comfy cushions where the children can browse through stories and non-fiction books related to the current learning theme, There is also an area for block-play and construction activities. Classes are mindfully laid out to feel friendly, welcoming and fun and to provide engaging, multiple learning spaces.

Lively Learning

Learning centers around diverse themes and is facilitated by art activities in multiple mediums, lively discussion and circle times, songs and movement, the sharing of stories, our nonsense rhymes, educational games and puzzles, discovery tables and Letterland characters. Children move seamlessly through formal and informal learning tasks and activities without noticing the difference, as we work hard to ensure that our children hardly realize they’re working!

Life and Social Skills

Each child is given the opportunity to be the Shopkeeper once a year, bringing small treats from home to sell to their classmates for R5. Life skills are practised in this fun way on both sides of the toy till, as both children participate in the giving and receiving of information, money and produce!

Children also learn through multiple informal opportunities, such as taking responsibility for laying out and packing up the picnic blankets for outdoor snack times, ringing the breaktime bell, or packing away and tidying up after activities. Being given responsibility is essential to their growing self-confidence and also fosters the family atmosphere we so value at our school.
